PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA
Palm Beach County, Florida (1,397,710), located on the southeast coast and made up of 2,385 square miles, is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Traffic Director.
The County operates as a Home Rule Charter County and is governed by the Board of County Commissioners. The Commission appoints the County Administrator who runs the day-to-day operations of the County. For Fiscal Year 2017, the County has an annual budget of nearly $4 billion and 6,274 positions.
The Traffic Director works under the direction of the Deputy County Engineer and is responsible for directing and coordinating functions within the Traffic Division. Primary responsibilities include overseeing all activities of the Traffic Division, including the development and implementation of a traffic control program and traffic data collection, reviewing traffic control device needs, i.e. signals, markings, and signs, and authorizing traffic counts, speed studies, and related studies. The Traffic Director is also responsible for ensuring coordination of traffic related matters with the State, County, and other municipalities and providing technical input for transportation planning. The Division has an annual operating budget of $16 million and 131 designated positions, including 10 professional engineers.
Minimum qualifications for the position include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Traffic Engineering or related field, along with at least seven years’ experience in all aspects of traffic engineering and supervising others. Qualified candidates must also be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Florida or have the ability to obtain Florida registration within one year. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices as well as an understanding of state and Federal traffic control regulations and guidelines. The salary for this position begins at $145,000, depending on the incumbent’s education, background, and experience.
