New Commissioner Workshop


Congratulations on a successful campaign! Now you must transition from campaigning into a your new role of governing, a job that brings with it new and complex challenges. The Florida Association of Counties hopes to make this transition easier for you by offering an education workshop designed specifically for newly elected commissioners.

Mark your calendars for the New Commissioners Workshop on January 7-8, 2009 in Alachua County. This in-depth, 1 ½ day workshop will begin around 2:00pm on Wednesday, January 7 and end with a reception on the evening on Thursday, January 8.

Participants will gain an understanding of a wide range of topics that are important for the job including:

  • Role and Authority of a County Commissioner
  • Ethics and Sunshine Laws
  • How to Run A Successful Meeting
  • Work effectively with County Staff
  • Media Training
  • Effective Leading and Governing

The New Commissioner Workshop provides 6 hours of core credits towards the County Commissioners Certification Program.

In 2009, the FCF Board is proving Small County Scholarships (SCS). These scholarships will be offered on a first come, first served basis for up to 10 Commissioners per class for counties with a population under 75,000 (up to 2 scholarships per county/per class).

Please also go ahead and book your hotel room for this event. The workshop will be held at Hilton University of Florida Conference Center at (352) 371-3600. Be sure to mention you are attending the FAC meeting to receive the reduced room rate of $129 single or double. The cut-off date for the FAC reduced room rate is Friday, December 12, 2008.The hotel will require a copy of your county’s tax exemption certificate upon your arrival to waive the sales tax. Reservation requests received after this date will be based on availability and prevailing rates.
