ASSISTANT CITY MANAGER
The City of Fort Lauderdale is located on the beautiful southeast coast of Florida, approximately 25 miles north of Miami and 40 miles south of Palm Beach. The City’s estimated population is 182,000, and it is the center of a metropolitan area of 1.8 million people. Encompassing approximately 36 square miles, Fort Lauderdale is the tenth largest city in Florida, the county seat, and the largest of 31 municipalities in Broward County.The City has a Commissioner-Manager form of government. The Commission is comprised of five elected officials including the Mayor, who is elected at-large, and four Commissioners, who are elected in non‐partisan district races. Elections occur every three years, and each elected official is eligible to serve three consecutive three‐year terms. The City provides a full range of municipal services, has an FY2019 total operating budget of $785 million ($358.8 General Fund), and employs a workforce of approximately 2,600 full-time employees, with several bargaining units. The City Management Team includes the City Manager, a Deputy City Manager, and an Assistant City Manager. Initially, the Assistant City Manager is expected to oversee the City’s internal services departments, although over time assigned departments may be rotated. Cultural fit is extremely important in this key leadership position. The ideal Assistant City Manager candidate will have a collaborative, team-oriented management style and will be positive, energetic and personable. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration or a closely related field, along with ten (10) years of executive level municipal management experience, preferably with an organization of similar size and complexity. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education. The City currently requires residency within the city limits for this position. Experience in finance, budget, human resources, strategic planning, performance management, negotiations, and technology is a plus.
