12/18/2008  Statement by Florida Association of Counties Executive Director Chris Holley regarding the ruling of the Circuit Court on Regional Conflict Counsels:
"The Florida Association of Counties is pleased with the court's ruling that any funding of regional conflict counsels by counties is unconstitutional.   FAC along with 26 counties filed a petition with the court, arguing that funding the Regional Conflict Counsels were the responsibility of the state under Article V of Florida's constitution.

Alachua County Commissioner Rodney Long Installed as Florida Association of Counties President
-Long will lead FAC in effort to preserve critical county services-
ALACHUA COUNTY, FL – Today Alachua County Commissioner Rodney J. Long was installed to serve as President of the Florida Association of Counties.  Long was sworn in at a special ceremony held in the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners chambers.

11/18/2008 DBPR Partners with the Florida Association of Counties to Protect Consumers When Working with Contractors
TALLAHASSEE—This month, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation partnered with the Florida Association of Counties to help protect consumers from the financial damages that can occur when a contractor fails to pay sub-contractors.  Prior to working with one of Florida’s 110,000 licensed contractors, a consumer should obtain a waiver of lien for jobs more than $2,500.

 9/23/2008  Florida Association of Counties Establishes Florida Public Safety Coordinating Commission
-Collaboration is key in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the civil and criminal justice system-
PINELLAS- Today the Florida Association of Counties will host the first meeting of the Florida Public Safety Coordinating Commission.  The Commission has been organized by FAC to improve the overall efficiency and effectives of Florida’s civil and criminal justice systems.   The meeting is being held at the Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort and will host state and community leaders in law enforcement, local government, mental health, and the judicial process.

 7/25/2008 Florida Association of Counties Co-Hosts 1st Annual Criminal Justice, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Reinvestment Conference
-Conference focused on bringing state and local governments together to discuss evidence based best practices in criminal justice that allow for the most effective use of taxpayer dollars-
HILLSBOROUGH- Today and tomorrow the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) along with the Florida Substance Abuse and Mental Health Corporation and Louis de le Parte Florida Mental Health Institute at the University of South Florida are hosting the 1st Annual Criminal Justice, Mental Health & Substance Abuse Reinvestment Conference at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Hillsborough County.  The conference is aimed at bringing together local and state officials to discuss the best ways to reinvest critical funds to prevent, intervene and divert the mentally ill and addicted from unnecessary incarceration.

 6/9/2008 FAC investment program provides refund to local governments
--With local governments having to reduce services the success of the program comes at critical time--
Due to the overwhelming success of the Florida Local Government Finance Program (FLGFP) over the past five years, the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) today announced a forthcoming rebate of half a million dollars.  Refunds will be determined based on the historic time-weighted proportion of funds borrowed under the program (as of June 1, 2008) and amounts will be announced at the Florida Association of Counties Annual Conference on June 25th. 

 4/22/2008 State Ignores Own Law to Give Tax Breaks to Out of State Companies
--Online travel companies aren’t paying required taxes costing state and local governments millions of dollars—
LEON – In a year where budgets are tight and vital services are getting gutted from state and local budgets, online travel companies are ignoring the law and costing governments millions of dollars each year.  In our tourism based economy, taxes are supposed to be paid by the consumer and retailer on hotel rooms.  However, online travel companies – all based out of state – are not collecting the full taxes required by state law.  This year legislation is being pushed through that would grant amnesty to these companies and permanently give these companies an undeserved tax break.

 4/17/2008 Partnership Between Counties and UF a Success
--Florida Association of Counties and UF completes advanced training for county commissioners—
ALACHUA – Today, the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) and the University of Florida complete the 2007-08 cycle of the Advanced County Commissioner (ACC) training.    This year, the program has been held in Gainesville and will see 20 commissioners graduate in June with a total of 46 graduating since the inception of the program in 2006.
