The public safety of all Floridians is a priority for the Association, including issues such as automated traffice enforcement, county emergency radio systems and funding for local crime labs.
Red Light Cameras
The Association supports legislation that would allow counties to use automated traffic enforcement technology at intersections to combat the increasing problem of red light running. Research demonstrates that when red light cameras are installed there are fewer fatal accidents, protecting more citizens in your community. Trauma centers, rural health centers and public hospitals will receive additional resources to save the lives of people involved in head on collisions. This measure is an attempt to change reckless driving habits and increase the safety of all Floridians.
Funding for Local Crime Laboratories
There are five local crime analysis laboratories administratively housed under the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The Department also has several laboratories throughout the state, but these local laboratories provide local law enforcement officers with timely analysis for their ongoing investigations. Counties contribute to the funding of these laboratories and also receive general revenue funds from the state. Funding from the state is at a crossroad – the Department recommended eliminating all state aid to local crime labs during the 2009-10 budget reduction exercise. A cut of this magnitude would be harmful to Florida’s residents who have been victimized by crime.
