The erosion of sand from Florida’s beaches is a continuing problem affecting not only our fragile ecosystems, but the economic viability of our coastal communities.   Unfortunately, we have exhausted the traditional sources of beach-quality sand adjacent to many of our beaches.  Consequently, the identification of suitable offshore sand sources is critical to sustaining these important resources.

To that end, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has developed geologic modeling technologies and a comprehensive inventory of identified offshore sand sources called the “Regional Offshore Sand Source Inventory” (ROSSI).    Just recently, the DEP announced a relaunch of the new and “modernized” ROSSI database for July 22, 2015.  The Department will be hosting a webinar that morning at 10:00 a.m. (with login availability at 9:45 a.m.).
