In 2012, the Florida Association of Counties lost a dear and dedicated friend in William J. “Bill” Roberts. Bill had served Florida’s counties as FAC’s General Counsel for 35 years. But, his efforts to help the Association did not end with his tenure as its official lead lawyer. Instead, when the Association purchased its third building, completing its headquarters facility at the corner of Park and Monroe Streets in downtown Tallahassee, Bill lent his time at a virtual pro bono rate, to negotiate the purchase and sale of that building; to assist with the securing of architectural firms , architectural approval, and extensive general contracting services; and to draft and negotiate the lease with the Association’s long time tenant, MetroDeli. Up until just before he died, Bill was volunteering and dedicating his wise legal counsel to the counties of this great state. Accordingly, the Association’s Executive Committee voted to memorialize Bill’s service to the Association and Florida’s counties by officially naming the large conference room that is in the building he volunteered to help FAC acquire and make functional, the William J. “Bill” Roberts Conference Room. A plaque will hang in the conference room area, bringing attention to this great Floridian’s service. FAC staff is notifying Bill’s immediate family and a few of his former law partners of this dedication.
