Last week, representatives from the Commission on Ethics presented proposed Ethics Code revisions to the Legislature.  These suggested changes include:

  • Amending the conflict of interest law to prohibit a legal entity controlled by an agency official from entering into contractual relationships with the official’s agency.  This would close a loophole in the current law that only applies the prohibition to the official as an individual;
  • Allowing final orders of the Ethics Commission to be recorded as liens on real or personal property;
  • Changing the voting conflicts law to prohibit local officials from attempting to influence a decision in which he or she has a conflict, even if the official does not vote on the matter due to the conflict.

No legislation containing these measures has been filed yet, but FAC staff will continue to monitor.
